The longer story. D & D What’s our bigger vision?
Continuity. Change. Community
This session was wide ranging. These are fragments and certainly not
in the order that they were said - as I didn't number my pages.
I also forgot to get names but am pretty sure Emma, Jonathan p, Derek
and others came and went.
Is D and D an event people do and then don't come back to?
Should we be worried by that or not.
The idea for An open space building. A place where culture can
communicate and work like this. Designed in open space.
We started talking about how D and D was a case of : "when it's not
over it's not over" it continues and we need to keep it going. There
was a plea for Improbable to do this and that our presence at the
heart of it was valued. The ideas was not the same without us.
I talked about the questions of who does and doesn't come?
Should we be trying to get certain people here ?
Is it really whoever comes are the right people?
We agreed that both the continuity of the regulars and the newcomers
was important.
There was discussion from Jonathan about whether the invite promotes
exclusivity? In what way does how we invite people put a cordon around
the event by becoming it's own clique?
Is the event perceived as an event for companies, like improbable, who
are familiar to devising?
Who are the people who come not knowing what it is?
The event before you come sounds amazing and daunting.
We talked about changing the venue and about changing the Venues of the satellite shunt OS events
The process of D&D is itself core to the collaborative process. It is one big collaboration.
It is "Water on parched ground"
Talking and conversation is central to what we are doing. Faces and
bodies are most important... electronic interaction is not enough.
Other stuff is possible in this context.
Someone was put off/intruiged because the were told there was an
opening ceremony.
This led to discussions about diversity and what this means. We want
diversity because it makes for a better event foremost - not to tick
boxes.
How does the wording of the invite affect this diversity?
We talked about when it happened in the year.
Again it has good and bad points. The two days affected families and
people with work commitments.
January and this particular weekend has issues for some people. More people were perhaps able to come because it was slightly later this year.
The event was talked of as a cooperative exchange. The cross pollination kept someone energised and going.
There was a sense of something building from year to year.
There were different dreams unfolding... This year was described as
not just talking but a node in the harmonic series of open spaces. A
collective story being told.
David Bohm was mentioned and his dialoguing work. Open space promotes
spacious listening/silence safety and respect.
D&D is a kindling point.
Someone said that: many sessions at earlier d and d's were about the need to value ourselves. This continues to happen but we are moving on. It is a vitamin shot.
Part of D&D is finding out who I am. It's a constructive comparison not a competitive one. Less now about being anonymous people we are fighting for a realisation that we are a community. By hearing yourselves talk you have awareness.
You read other sessions and collaborate with the whole event. The ripples go out.
Things that were positive were that it was generous not competitive.
We were encouraged to share our work not be selfish or protective.
Like Robert Le Page says give away the recipe.
You might start out intimidated but this is dispelled by engaging.
A desire for more non commercial theatre circus space were here.
Animation people musical theatre.
It is the word of mouth that gets people to come. Also some people didn't come because we forgot to remind them.
We were asked who the invites were sent to?
Other things for the future were. A forum and mentoring for people
filling out forms for funding. Could this be part of the Improvable
mentoring scheme.
Are there support schemes regarding funding application out there? Do
the arts council do them? Should we ask them to? Would they come to
do that?
At the NSDF the audience seemed diverse but the performers weren't.
It's up to us to take responsibility to change that.
If you were/are a "straight actor" not a creator would you feel welcome?
Should we advertise in the stage. Should someone write to the stage
about how great it was?
Phelim talked about his dream for a cultural building that was an open
space. Where artists could meet about issues and it was a protected
space for cultural dialogue to happen in. Also to meet and respond
fast to world events.
We talked about other spaces we could hold this event. Someone said
the QE conference halls. We misheard and thought it was the QE2 but
thought an open space on a cruise would be good.
Blackheath halls
Nightclub spaces
Other times and spaces were Edinburgh and The NSDF.
Satellite events.
We loved that it was a community and we were not alone.
"I'm not alone. I'm happy you work in an industry where people really
care ! "
I didn't write these notes up for the report but asked lee to call an
action session that was a continuation of this...
Which was called..?
