August: Osage County
Producing company: Steppenwolf Theatre
Venue: The National Theatre, Southbank
www.nationaltheatre.org.uk/osagecounty
The run actually ends on Wednesday 21st January and as far as I know has sold out. But I happen to have a spare ticket for this Sunday's matinee (3pm) performance going for the nicely rounded down price of £20!
I personally have a thing for the classic dysfunctional American family drama so was excited hearing about a brand new play like August: Osage County filled with vicious satirical wit and characters with enough skeletons to fill the US army barracks locker rooms, though in most ways I'm looking forward to seeing the epic doll house the action unravels in. I'm sure maybe too much hype and praise may put my expectations in overdrive at a time I also want to see some more small-scale intimate theatre but I look forward to an enthralling, uncomfortable but fantastic experience at the National!
And now a short blurb:
When the large Weston family unexpectedly reunites in Oklahoma, after their father disappears, their home explodes in a maelstrom of repressed truths and unsettling secrets. This new play unflinchingly – and uproariously – exposes the dark side of the Midwestern American family.
The internationally renowned Steppenwolf Company, last seen at the National Theatre with The Grapes of Wrath, returns to London with this Broadway smash-hit production, winner of the 2008 Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize for Best Play.
So if anyone has heard and believe the hype that's come from Stateside and hasn't yet catched it but wants to, then please do message me on the Ning as soon as you can, as it's no surprise to say that this is quite short-notice!
